With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

I don't care if I never get back

I went to Alan's pool again yesterday. I didn't take a walk so I tried to swim to get my aerobic exercise. I made myself do 20 laps. I believe that is 500 m. It might be 500 yards. I couldn't do it non-stop though. I used to be able to swim 2500 yards. My goal is simpler now; I just want to be able to swim 500 meters nonstop.

I was going to stay there till seven then go straight to my Rotisserie League's Party. We heard thunder a little before six and that scuttled that plan. I went to the locker room to change and the rain started. I was lucky it was just drizzling till I got to my car. After I drove a few minutes the downpour started. I had about an hour to kill so I stopped for dinner and went to a mall to see if they had any good toys. I didn't find anything exciting but at least I was dry. I'm not really a mall person.

The party was fun. The attendance was disappointing though. We used to get most of the 12-person league to go to the parties, no longer. Now it is just the hard-core people. There was Jeff who hosted the party, Jim, the league commissioner, Angelo and his son, Kevin, and myself. Too mad Marc couldn't make it. He is my best friend in the league but he lives in Pa. The league functions are the only times that I get surrounded by testosterone. I think I need that occasionally. We watched the all-star game and talked lots of sports. When the conversation moved to politics I tried to change it. Mine is far more liberal than anyone else there. Someone was upset with the Pledge of Allegiance decision and of course said that I was in favor of it and wouldn't stand during when they sang God Bless America at Met games. That was a good move as the discussion moved to Kate Smith singing it, which turned the discussion to the Philadelphia Flyers. She used to sing it before important hockey games.

The game itself was great till Bud Selig, the commissioner, ruined it. It was tied 7-7 after nine innings. Both teams had used all their players. Selig stopped the game after 10 innings because there were no pitchers left. Both pitchers in the game were starters and had only pitched 2 innings. There could have pitched more. If you are going to do something like that then there should be a rule that says so. It shouldn't be done on the fly.

Now for the daily installment of Gella Solomon International Woman of Mystery. Early yesterday Gella was prevented by the Mounties from continuing her excavations of the possible Atlantean ruins. They told her that the site was contaminated with deadly toxic wastes. I do not believe that story. The records show that there was never any industry on the park. I have checked the records and this is not the first time something like this has happened. I think that the Canadians are making use of the lost secrets of Atlantis. Perhaps they have discovered useful technology or maybe ancient jokes are the source of the fabled Canadian sense of humour.

When Gella protested they advised her that it was probably best if she left the country. She took the hint and returned New York. When she got here she found Gregory, King of the Monkey Turtles, waiting for her. He regretted calling off their engagement and wanted her back. In an effort to win her back he sang a song. The exact words weren't recorded but the basic structure was this:

Declaration of my feelings for you
Elaboration of those feelings
Description of how long these feelings have existed
Belief that no one else could feel the same as I
Reminiscence of the pleasant times we shared
And our relationship's perfection
Recounting of the steps that lead to our love's dissolution
Mostly involving my unfaithfulness and lies--

Penitent admission of wrongdoing
Discovery of the depth of my affection
Regret of the lateness of my epiphany
Title of the song
Naïve expression of love
Reluctance to accept that you are gone
Request to turn back time
And rectify my wrong--
Repetition of the title of the song

Enumeration of my various transgressive actions
Admit sufficient motivation
Realization that my actions led to your departure
And my resultant lack of sleep and appetite
Enunciation of my past insensitivity
Promise of my reformation
Reassurance that you are still foremost in my thoughts now
Plea for instruction how to gain your trust again

Request for reconciliation
Listing of the numerous tasks that I would perform
Of this full and emotional compensation
Oh, title of the song
Naïve expression of love
Reluctance to accept that you are gone
Request to turn back time
And rectify my wrong--
Repetition of the title of the song

Acknowledgement that I acted foolishly
Increasingly desperate pleas for your return
Sorry for my infidelity
Vain hope that sins are forgivable
I plead for one more opportunity
Drop to knees to elicit crowd response
I pray to my chosen deity
Modulation and I hold a high note…..

Title of the song (can you hear the title)
Naïve expression of love (expression)
Reluctance to accept that you are gone (babe, I am wrong)
Request to turn back time (I am requesting baby)
And rectify my wrong-- (my wrong, yeah, my)
Title of the song (talking bout the title)
Title of the song (oh the title)
Title of the song (title of the song, yeah)
Title of the song (title of the song, baby)
Title of the song (title of the song, oh yeah yeah yeah)
Title of the song (title of the song, baby)
