With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
May 04, 2007 - 11:24 a.m. I don't want this to become a dream diary but I had a personal first in my dream last night. I woke up not from something scary or tragic happening in my dream but because I was dreaming that I was in a room that was hot and stuffy. It was far from lucid dreaming. Beaver Cleaver was entering the army in the dream and it didn't even dawn on me to think of the rumor that Jerry Mathers died in Vietnam. Did anything interesting happen at school yesterday? Not that I can remember. That doesn't mean nothing interesting happened though. Maybe space aliens abducted my class and me performed unspeakable experiments on us then returned us to the classroom and erased our memories. Can you prove it didn’t' happen? There are now pictures up of the kazoo I gave to Emilie's foray into the world of opera. Here it is in a starring role in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring. Speaking of Emilie there was a big article about her in the Herald. They must have cut out the part about the kazoo. Last night I played bridge with Roy. When we play at The Franklin Bridge Club we generally finish around 50% or a bit lower and feel lucky when we score in more than Strat C. Last night we played at the Garden City Bridge Club. When we play there we expect to do well and we did. We had a 55% game. That was only good enough for third in Strat B but is nothing to be ashamed about. I did something that is perfectly ethical but I still feel funny about. Our opponents were two women that were clearly not that good. They were kvetching that they hadn't played any hands; they kept on defending. When my right hand opponent made a bid I made a take-out double on a substandard hand. I never would have done that against good opponents but I figured it might get them flummoxed and it did. Making a bid based on your opponents not just your cards is what Larry calls "playing the body." It is part of the game just as it is in poker. I didn't do anything external to the game like trying to intimidate or distract them. I just made a call I thought they would have trouble handling. It is my ethical duty to do as well as I can on every hand but I still feel awkward about it. Wow I have absolutely nothing on my calendar for this weekend. Roy said he'd be free on Sunday. I have a lot of work to do but I'll try and make time to do something with him. I guess I should be happy that I don’t have anything planned. I have to make up two tests, grade one tests, and I really should make up two finals too. Next weekend is SMAF so I can't do anything then. I've written and deleted quite a few paragraphs this entry. Another I didn't even start to write. A almost deleted that but decided to keep it. My friend Nora writes film reviews. During the last fund drive she asked everyone to come up with culinary terms she could work into her review of the film Waitress. I just read the NY Times review of it and the reviewer, A.O. Scott did the same thing. Great minds think alike. You can read them and compare; Nora's review, Scott's review. I really have accomplished friends.
