When they burn books, they will, in the end, burn human beings
June 25, 2008 - 12:10 p.m. My Crohn's disease is acting up. I missed Zoë Lewis's CD release party because of it. It started hurting when I ate dinner and was still ready to go but decided that digression was the better part of valor. I'll stay home today and hopefully will be fine for Red Molly's show tomorrow in Hoboken. I'm doing the merch. I woke up feeling fine but I feel tightness now. If I eat breakfast it will hurt. I'm really hungry. I'm not sure what I'll do. Maybe I'll just have an English muffin or something. We already knew of the perfidy of the Bush administration but there were two articles in the NY Times the last few days that demonstrate how routine its lack of respect for the institutions of government is. The first is the poorly titled White House Refused to Open Pollutants E-Mail. In 2007 the Supreme Court rules that the EPA had to determine whether greenhouse gases represent a danger to health or the environment. In December the EPA determined that the answer was "yes" and emailed that to the Whitehouse. It wasn't the answer the Whitehouse wanted to hear so they simply never opened it. That's a response you might expect from an adolescent, not the president of the United States. They then pressured the EPA to weaken the sentence. The administration either doesn't value the truth at all or it doesn't believe in that the truth should be determined by scientific rational methods. Those are both scary ideas. The second article is in today's paper. Report Assails Political Hiring at the Justice Department. The career lawyer positions at the Justice Department are civil service jobs and it is illegal to use political considerations in hiring them. That law was violated. Less qualified Republicans and conservatives were hired over more qualified liberals and Democrats. This has been a hallmark of the Bush administration, the lack of a division between politics and governance. The goal was never to hire the best people but those that shared their ideology. This is a huge part of why the administration has proved so incompetent at carrying out its basic missions like protecting and restoring New Orleans. So what did I want to write about god? I have no idea. Well that's not true. I have some idea. I just don't know the angle I wanted to use. I know I'll write about friends and adventures. There are some friends that when I'm with them we have adventures. It isn't a matter of what you do but how your perceive what you do. Now I have adventures by myself. I think I do see colors brighter than most people. Of course that is a hard thing to know. What I am sure of though is that there are some people that bring out the colors, sounds, smell, and taste of the world when I am with them. They turn the mundane into an adventure. I'm not going to say who they are, if you are one of them you should know if we have adventures. It is one of the great divisions of humanity. I hate it when I can write so little about something so important to myself but I think that's all I have to say. Oh some news on the WFUV front. Guess what I heard them play on Monday. I'll give you a hint, Monday is the day they highlight new music. So what came out this week that I'd be excited they play? Yes that's right, something from Crooked Still's Still Crooked. They never played a single song off of Crooked Still's last album Shaken By A Low Sound. I think my talk with them really did some good. It isn't a revolution but that isn't what I was going for. If you are a listener give them some positive feedback. Let them know that playing artists like Crooked Still is important to you. I have come to an agreement I'm buying. That whole thing scares me. I have to take care of that today. I know I should be looking at this as an adventure but instead I'm just feeling stressed. I'm so stressed I couldn't think of the word "stressed" for a minute. Wish me luck. I am finding it so hard to do things.
