With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Happy Turkey Day

Thanksgiving: I'm not going to write the tradition things I'm thankful for entry. I think I did that last year and I also have done it periodically during the year. I think I have enough for a regular entry if not I have some material I've been saving for a rainy day.

The plan was for me to drive my parents up to New Paltz to spend the day at my sister's. They were changed this morning when my father said he's been feeling even worse than usual. He has been sick for quite some time now. It is just a general weakness and lack of appetite. The doctors think it has to do with his kidneys. I'm starting to get worried now. I'm hoping it is something that they can cure easily once they pin it down. He would like to go to the hospital but I don't know what good that would do. The doctors don't think it is necessary and he is having enough trouble eating good food let alone hospital fare.

Plan B was for my sister and nephew to come down to New York. The main problem was that she had the turkey and had to cook it before she left. This meant that instead of us getting there between noon and 1 PM she got here around 5 PM.

I actually used the time to good effect. I marked the corrections of my classes test. As usual I was quite disappointed in the results. We did problems just like the ones on the test for homework and in class yet people still couldn't get them right the second time through. They do the corrections at home and nothing is out of bounds. They can look through their notes, read the book, work together, and ask for outside help. Yet people still get them wrong. They don't even try some of the questions. I don't know if they aren't making an effort or are just so lost that nothing can help. I know some people just copied what others did. I know this because they copied wrong. They will be getting something wrong all the intermediate steps then get the right answer. 'X's mysteriously become 'Y's along the way. There is always some way for me to tell.

I had fun with my Alison and Max once they got here, I always do. The first thing I did was give Max two CDs I've been saving for him. The first was the Christine Lavin CD Subway Series that Christine signed for him this summer. I forgot to give it to him before he went off to college. It is the album that has the track that I'm on. The other was You Will Go To the Moon his first Früvous CD.

I was good and didn't grill him too much about school. I asked him what he was taking which he was happy to talk about. I also asked if he had met Lisa Lefleur. I was pleased to find that he had even though he hasn't had a chance to go to many Monty Python Fan Club meetings. He is loving college. It is great to find out that everyone knows Monty Python; it is so different than high school. I was happy to hear that all his friends know Früvous and TMBG. He would fit in so well with my friends. I forced a copy of the first Discworld book. I told him that he'd love it. That it was even better than Douglas Adams. He doesn't quite believe me but that was enough to get him to want to read it.

After Fondue Alison and Max had to get back to New Paltz so that Max could go to a party at his friend's house. He is doing the "see all your home friends during the weekend home from college" thing.

OK this looks long enough to post without using any of my spare material. I wish I could think of a nice philosophical coda but you can't always get what you want.
