With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

They Might Be Moldy Peaches

The problem with the hours I’m keeping now is that I’m always tired when I update. I imagine my punctuation is even worse than usual.

When I got to Bryant Park to work today I saw that there was a concert going on. It was the last of a Broadway at Bryant Park series. Members of the casts of three Broadway musicals performed songs from them. First it was Cabaret then The Full Monty and finally Chicago. When I saw what was going on I realized it wouldn’t be able to do any recruiting so I just watched the show. I was most excited about The Full Monty because Annie Golden is in it. She did a song from it and was marvelous as usual. The only problem is that it was about 1,000,000° and I had to sit in the sun. Good thing I had my sun block and my big hat.

After the show I went online at the library then was off to pick up Lawrence at Penn Station. His train was due in at 3:15 and I got there at 3:10, pretty good timing. I was able to catch him coming up from the platform. I never see Carey till she’s under the departures board where we meet if I miss her coming up.

We grabbed a bite to eat then we took the subway uptown to see They Might Be Giants at Summerstage. Summerstage is on the east side of the park so I got to give Lawrence a mini tour of the park. We saw Strawberry fields and the Bethesda Fountain.

When we got to the line we found Lawrence’s friend Christine and joined her on the line. We then realized that neither of us knew if Gella was coming for if she even knew about the show. I looked for her on the line and she wasn’t there. When John showed up he didn’t know either. He had a cell phone so we tried to call her. The number I had wasn’t right though. They let us in at 6 and we ran to get places up front. We ended up stage Flansburgh.

The first act was excerpts from People are Wrong a musical co-written by Flansburgh’s wife, Robin, and Julia Greenberg and featuring Sean Altman and Flansburgh. Filling the gaps between the acts was a Russian band Messer Chups. They played what sounded like surf music. Not exactly my cup of tea but they were interesting. I had heard bad things about the Moldy Peaches but went in with an open mind. I liked them the first few songs then they grew more and more tiresome. The clincher was the world’s worst recorder solo. They tried to make up for what they lacked in talent with costumes. In the end they reminded me of far less spontaneous version of Trainwreck with Clowns taking itself too seriously.

TMBG rocked as always. I used to have reservations about them: they are gone. They did quite a few songs from No. That made me happy, I love that album. They faked us out by using the confetti cannons on a new song not James K. Polk. I’ll leave it to Lawrence to give the details of the show.

After the show a group of us went to a dinner on Broadway for a late snack. I left early to catch a train so I could maybe get some sleep tonight. Not before I updated of course. Poor Lawrence is taking the 2:05 Train back home and he has to work tomorrow.

Last night I talked to Leah for the first time since she got back from camp. I really needed a Leah fix.

An observation I forgot to make yesterday. When I saw Madeleine Peyroux, it was a bonding experience with Carey even though she wasn’t there. When we first met we were both surprised that the other one had heard of Madeleine. We would often talk about how she disappeared off the face of the earth. Even though Carey wasn’t there I kept thinking about her during the show. I still have bonding experiences with my father. There is always a little pain when this happens but there is more pleasure. I miss him but I remember the good things that will always be with me.
