With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2001-11-04 - 12:45 p.m. I'm glad I wrote that entry last night; I think it helped to get it out of my system. Perhaps Dante was right and the road out of Hell goes through its center. When I finished writing it I checked my email and found I had one new letter, it was from Carey. It was just a little note but I started feeling better when I read it. This morning I went to WFUV and got my usual volunteering high. In addition to the regulars, Karin, Gary, and Jim, Nora and Peter were there. Nora was the first friend I made at WFUV. I went to the Irish Festival with her in late August. It is amazing how fast the world can seem to change. It's a beautiful day outside and in. I do pretty well for someone without a mood disorder don't I? All these happy thoughts remind me of something I wanted to write about, smiling. It is amazing how much a smile can help. There was a volunteer this week whose name I don't even know. I never met her before and I didn't speak to her that much at the station. She left an impression on me though. Why? Because she was a cute redhead? No, it was because whenever I came walked by her she'd look up and smile at me. Not an empty phony smile but a sincere one. Like another cute redhead I know she had a nice smile. There are signs by the phones saying, "smile." Even though we are working the phones people we talk to can tell the difference. When you smile you change your whole attitude. I know when I call people the whole tone of the conversation can be determined by if they smile if they hear it's me. When they do, I smile and we start off on the right foot. It's amazing how a little thing can make such a big difference. Of course smiles is the longest word in the English language, there is a mile between the first and last letter.
