With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-05-18 - 12:54 p.m. never heard from school yesterday so I don't know what they did about my grades. I am hoping that they just printed out a new scantron for my class and entered the grades that I gave in the spreadsheet I handed in. I'll call again on Monday to confirm this. Last night I went to the Bottom Line for the Beat Goes On Jagger/Richards songbook. I met Melissa there who was punctual as always. I now have two people who live in New York I can go to concerts with regularly now, Melissa and Lisa. I usually get to shows really early but I know I don't need to for these shows. We got there at 6:45 and there weren't that many people around. If I were by myself I would have sat in my usual spot right next to the stage but that was too close for Melissa so we sat a bit back. If we had sat up front we would have sat with one of my friend from WFUV . It would have been a bit awkward though since I totally blanked on his name and I am still blanking on it. It is difficult not having a working memory. The people sitting across from us started talking to us. One of them had seen me the night before outside of Irving Plaza before the Dan Bern show. She got sick and had to leave and wanted to know how the show was. I had to disappoint her and tell her that I didn't go to the show either. We ended up talking to them quite a bit though. When we brought up Früvous the woman said that her mother used to live in Toronto and was always telling her about them! After sitting for a bit we saw the Kennedys by the bar and went over to say hello. Maura loved being able to walk to the show, they live only a few blocks away. They love the Beat Goes On Shows and now they are so convenient for them. I asked Maura about the Losers Lounge shows and she would like to do them too. She liked my suggestion of a LL tribute to the Ramones. It turns out that Maura is a big Ramones fan and learned to play bass guitar to their music. One of the reasons they wanted to live in that neighborhood was because of the Ramones connection. She is also a fan of the Sex Pistols, how many people would have guessed that? The Kennedys' new album is coming out next month and they are having a record release party at the Cutting Room . I'll be there of course. The show was great as usual. The Kennedys were the only performers in the show that Melissa knew but she had a great time too. During the show we played crossed between quite a bit. The performers had a great time making believe they were Mick Jagger. They were all strutting and posturing across the stage. The performers I had seen on their own were. Ira Kaplan and Annie Hayden from Yo Lo Tango Freedy Johnson, Ricky Byrd, Willie Nile, The Mike Hunt Band featuring Tammy Lang, The Kennedys, Joe Hurley from Rogues March, and closing the show as always Carlton Smith. All the performers were great and so was the band. Andy Burton the Musical Director and keyboardist did a bang up job. It is amazing how smoothly the show ran. The Stones are a band that people have strong opinions about. Many think of them as the greatest rock and roll band ever. (People who have never heard Batnose of course) Others hate them. Personally for pure rock 'n' roll I'll take the Who but you have to give the Stones credit. They produced a tremendous number of classic songs. No one personified the Rock attitude better than the Stones. There is variety in there music too. Everyone thinks of the swagger of Street Fighting Man and Satisfaction But there was so much more to there music than that. There was the sweetness of Ruby Tuesday and the country influenced Country Honk. They did psychedelic music and the blues. My favorite is Sympathy for the Devil the ultimate nihilistic song. I'm not a nihilist by a long shot, I usually go for the upbeat life affirming songs like the Kennedys' Life is Large but there are times when you just need to shout out that everything is a crock and no song does it better than Sympathy for the Devil. After the show it was raining so we went right to the subway. Melissa suggested that we see Randy Newman; he is giving a concert some time next month. She was a bit hesitant about asking because Randy isn't cool. Randy is one of those artists who the general public might not think is cool but that musicians love. He wrote a lot more that Short People. Vin Scelsa trained me well. It is raining today so the Montclair Festival was postponed till tomorrow. Deni Bonet.
