I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Jesus Died For Somebody's Sins But Not Mine

I can't wait till I can go a week without mentioning my health or my body. The time hasn't come yet though. I hardly slept last night. This is getting ridiculous. All I want is to be able to be comfortable enough to be able to sleep 7 hours straight.

As a consequence of this I ended up sleeping most of the afternoon. That was enough to get me through the evening. During one of my times I was awake this afternoon I went online to update Leah's diary. It thought she was going to be at camp till Friday but when I came online there she was on my Buddylist. It was great being able to talk to her. She has lost her voice so we couldn't talk on the phone though. I hope she gets better soon. **Hugs** I ended up updated for her anyway.

After talking to her I went back to sleep. I woke up just in time to catch my train into the City. The plan for tonight was to see David Johansson and Patti Smith at the Lincoln Center Outdoors festival. Even though I didn't get there early I was able to get a pretty good seat, about 8th row center. That's an advantage to going to a show by yourself; it is easier to find single seats.

A little aside: A pet peeve of mine is people putting there stuff on a seat next to them when they aren't saving it for someone. This was a very crowded show with lots of people looking for seats and some having to sit way back or to stand. Yet I saw that there were seats up front that no one ever sat in. The people thought they were so important that they get a seat for their stuff while the little people can just stand.

The show was great but I was in pain most of the time. My stomach was not in good shape. I would have been totally rocking during Patti's set if I were feeling right.

I had to go to the show no matter how I felt because I feel so guilty about living in New York and never having seen a Patti, she is a living legend. Despite lots of technical difficulties she put on a great show. She really knows how to work a crowd. I decided that I would leave at 9:50 no matter what so that I could make the 10:19 train; the next one is at 11:19. Her big encore, Gloria was over at 9:50 which was perfect. She did one more song, O What a Beautiful Morning accompanied by a wind up chicken music box, which I heard as I was leaving. The timing was perfect. I made my train and got home by 11. I'm feeling a bit better now too.

Yesterday I was extolling the virtues of intimate venues but I have to admit I love these big outdoor shows too. There is the excitement of sharing the experience with all those people. The same thing happens at ball games. The fact that the show was free made it that much better.

Patti was of course one of the founders of Punk Rock. That was over 25 years ago and she is still going strong. I hate it when I see a classic performer and they have become institutions. More like people imitating themselves then being themselves. Patti was still natural and filled with energy. She is also a performer who reflects a place. She is a total New Yorker and she was playing at home. Despite the pain I wouldn't have missed this for the world.
