With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Starry Starry Night

It wasn't a very productive day today. I did mark the make-up tests. Very interesting results too. The people who missed the test did far worse than the people who showed up. Either the shut down of services hit poor students the hardest or the poor students made less of an effort to get in. Which do you think it is? There is a third possibility of course, that it is just coincidence.

The rest of the day I just watched TV, listened to music and went online.

I played bridge with Roy tonight. We went through our old routine. I went to his office after work and we hung out there and talked for an hour. Then we drove to Charlie Brown's for dinner. Then off to the FrankLin club for bridge. My time with Roy and Alan is the only real guy time I have. We didn't have a great night of bridge but we had fun.

I did get very annoyed at one player tonight. He implied that Roy and I weren't playing ethically when we were. We were following the rules of bridge exactly. He wanted us to break the rules. It is hard to explain to someone not familiar with the game, I guess that's all my readers but Lawrence and Roy. Roy didn't alert a cue bid. What that means is that he didn't warn our opponents that when I bid a suit our opponents bid that it had a special meaning. The rules state specifically that you are not allowed to alert a cue bid. It is against the rules to do so. Everyone knows the bid has an artificial meaning and it is up to your opponents to ask what it means. If you alert you would be reminding your partner what your bid means. The proper thing for him to have done if he thought I was wrong was to call the director, which I invited him to do. He didn't do so and belittled the director in the process. I really should have called the director to report his rude behavior.

This annoyed me more than it should have. It is a pet peeve of mine. The real problem though is that I had a fight with Carey today. The worst part is we didn't get to talk to each other after we made up. I needed that closure.

I'll make an alert to everyone now. On early Saturday morning, that is after midnight this Friday the Leonid meteor shower will peak. This year it is supposed to be particularly spectacular. If you can go someplace away from city lights and watch them. The best way to do so is to bring something to lie down on and lie flat on your back and watch the show. The shower will seem to be coming out of the constellation Leo, thus the name, the Leonids.

Today's poem is a haiku. Yes that means I was lazy and wanted to write something short:

The Leonids.

Lights from the lion,
Streak across the pitch-black sky.
A free show for all.
