With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

LOTR Redux

It's Friday and I don't teach so I took my father to dialysis today. How often to I use the word dialysis in my entries now? I guess I'll get used to it eventually. I felt bad because I couldn't take him home because I was meeting Lisa for dinner in the city, but now I'm getting ahead of myself.

I filled out Carey's slam books today. There were some answers that I knew we'd agree on without looking. Anything involving cute has to have the Kennedys as an answer. They are the cutest couple in the world. I'm seeing them tomorrow and Sunday.

I guess I didn't get that far ahead of myself; I didn't really do anything else today. I arranged to meet Lisa at Bendix, a great dinner near where I used to work. A Jewish man married a Thai woman and the result was a Jewish/Thai/American restaurant. They always did a tremendous busy. If you didn't get there early there was a wait. Imagine my surprise when I got there and found that it was closed. They had a second restaurant in the East Village; I'll have to see if that is around. As soon as I saw it was closed I called Lisa on her cell phone. As it was ringing I saw her in front of the restaurant reaching for her phone so I hung up and walked over to her. We ended up eating at Boston Market instead.

After dinner we walked up to 34th street to see Lord of the Rings. This was Lisa's first time seeing it. This is "my" movie so I want to see it with my friends and I don't mind seeing it again. On the second viewing I paid more attention to the special effects. They really are amazing. In the beginning there is a scene where Gandalf is talking to Bilbo. Bilbo is made to look smaller using CGI. They walk around each other and pass objects back and fourth. It looks totally real; there is no hint that it is technical wizardry. That is special effects at its best, when you don't think of them as effects.

I found something new that bothered me. In the book almost all elves have dark hair and grey eyes. Blonds are only common among the Vanyar who never returned to middle earth from the Blessed Realm. The only blond elves named are Glorfindal and Galadriel. In the film every elf but Arwen and her father Elrond is blond; it is a distinguishing characteristic of elves.

I still love the film though and hope it wins the Oscar for best picture.

After the film I didn't have much time before my train left. On the walk over there Lisa gave me a great present. Her company is doing the printing for the LOTR DVD, she gave me some proofs they did of the artwork. They are great.

I'm seeing Lisa again on Sunday and I'll get to meet her boyfriend Marnine. I wonder if I'll ever get over being surprised I have friends.
