With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-05-28 - 4:16 p.m. I got the best ego boosts since the last entry. Two friends told me how much they appreciate me: One in an email and one on the phone. I shouldn't need to hear that but I do. I know I'm never going to be one of those people that everybody loves; I'm an acquired taste. I can't really complain about it too. It is too much dependent on conscious decisions on my part. I can no more expect everyone to love me than someone who makes offbeat independent films can expect to make a box office hit. I have started getting more involved in my Rotisserie league. I'm not going to go anywhere this league but maybe I can pick up some good young players. This week I picked up Aaron Harang a rookie pitcher on Oakland who made an impressive major league debut. I'm checking the Sporting News Fantasy page every day and looking for more players to pick up. Perhaps I'll even make a trade. I own Ruben Sierra who is playing way over his head. I'm sure he'll drop off. Perhaps I can trade him for two good players. I have so many good things lined up to do in June. Appel Farm , The Kennedys' CD Party, Creepcon , Carbon Leaf, and Clearwater and of course. It's Tuesday and I still haven't written my weekly TV viewing recommendations for the week. Here's what's up for the rest of the week. Saturday, May 29: 5:00 AM Sundance - 12:00 noon Sundance - Absolute Beginners: The film is about the birth of the separate teenage culture in Britain in the early 60s. It's a Rock Musical featuring David Bowie, Ray Davies, and Sade, singing and acting. The movie has a distinctive look and sound and works as a musical and as a drama. It has the energy level of a rebellious teen and takes as much joy in puncturing pretension. I will have to miss it this time around as I don't get Sundance. Thursday, May 30: 2:00 PM US-: Dog Day Afternoon: Perhaps Al Pacino's greatest role. He plays a gay bank robber who robs the bank to finance his lover's sex change operation. The movie is funny, moving, and exciting all at once. It is so bizarre that it could only be based on a true story. Cuckoo's Nest won best pic that year but I'd have given it to DDA. Friday, May 31: 9:00 AM USA - The Ox-Bow Incident: A seminal western about frontier justice and it's aftermath. Henry Fonda as usual plays the epitome of decency. Saturday, June 1: 8:00 PM TNT- Unforgiven: Clint Eastwood directed and starred in this brilliant Western Noir. It has all the elements of the Classic Western with the feeling of Film Noir; A violent film with a strong anti-violence message. In addition to Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman give great performances.
