With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-01-02 - 9:57 p.m. I'm still feeling pretty bleh. Reading The Lord of the Rings really helps though. I know the book so well but it still makes me feel good. I guess it's like the people who get comfort reading, and rereading the bible. There are passages that aren't at all important to the story but somehow make me feel good. 'It would be a grievous blow to the world, if the Dark Power overcame the Shire; if all your kind, jolly, stupid Bolgers, Hornblowers, Boffins, Bracegirdles, and the rest, not to mention the ridiculous Bagginses, became enslaved' 'Well, sir,' said Sam dithering a little. 'I heard a deal that I didn't rightly understand, about the enemy, and rings, and Mr. Bilbo, sir, and dragons, and a fiery mountain, and - and Elves, sir. I listened because I couldn't help myself, if you know what I mean. Lor bless me, sir, but I do love tales of that sort. And I believe them too, whatever Ted may say. Elves, sir! I would dearly love to see them. Couldn't you take me to see Elves, sir, when you go?' Doesn't that just take you into another reality? They are nothing but conversations but they are better than all the special effects in all the films ever made. So who's going to take me to see Elves? Any volunteers?
