With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-07-06 - 3:35 p.m. I'm feeling guilty because I didn't update yesterday. I'm assuaging my guilt now. You can assuage your guilt by reading my last entry.
We still had quite a bit of time before the show and we were deciding what to do. Lisa mentioned that she saw a sign for Little Italy on the way and that she had never been there. As soon as I heard that I knew I had to take her to Ferrara's, the world famous Italian Café and Bakery. It is right in the heart of Little Italy, on Grand Street between Mott and Mulberry. There was only one problem, it was late afternoon and we had to have dinner before the concert. I decided that it was worth it to defy convention so we had desert before we had dinner. Lisa had a chocolate truffle and I had a napoleon and an iced cappuccino. We then walked down to the seaport. It's a little tricky finding your way around there but I've done that walk before and found the most direct route. The schedule and WFUV said the show was at 6 but the GBS website said it was at 5:30. We got there a bit before five. I didn't expect there to be seats, I had never seen them at a seaport concert before, but there were. We decided to just grab some hotdogs from the venders and grab seats before they were taken. We got seats front row center. They weren't by the stage though. There was a large standing area in front of the seats. We figured we'd sit during the opening acts and stand for GBS. Right after we got there Fran showed up and said hi. She runs GBS Boston: The Invasion Begins. She lives in Boston but drove down for the show. Next John showed up. I knew I'd know people at this show. Next up was Phyllis. Phyllis and Lisa have been missing each other for about a year. Phyllis does merch for most of the Irish bands, in the area, including Black 47. She often does it for GBS. Carolyn showed up next. That was it for Früheads that I know. John was the only one under 30. Where is everybody else? How come I never see them at GBS show? I know Gella's excuse, she was in Vancouver. That would have been a hard commute. Something always comes up to prevent her from seeing GBS. One of the first things I did when I met her was turn her on to them. I gave her a tape and maybe a CD. The first act, The Young Dubliners came on at 5:15, which was earlier than anybody said. The seaport really should get it act together. Phyllis is a big fan and put on her Young Dubliners cap. They played a mix of traditional Irish music with pop. I liked them quite a bit but didn't love them Seven Nations, a New York Based band was next. They played Irish Rock music. The rock was not particularly to my taste. They weren't bad but they didn't excite me. As soon as GBS came on you could feel the electricity. Lisa was feeling tired and had suggested that we stay seated but we were up and out of our seats a few bars into Donkey Riding, their first song. It was a good thing too. So many people had come by then that we couldn't have seen anything if we remained seated. My other friends were up front except for Carolyn who sat with us and stood up with us. GBS put on their usual high-energy show. They did some great new songs. I was glad to hear that. Perhaps they'll start putting out albums more frequently. The one song that they didn't play that I missed was Boston and St Johns The nautical songs worked really well on the pier at the Seaport. They should do a show on the Peking, the Barque moored next to the stage, some time. There were quite a few Canadians there, probably Newfies but we didn't have any of the problems I had with them the last few times I'd seen GBS. They were enthusiastic but well behaved. They didn't shove everyone else out of the way or sing off key at the top of their lungs. After the show we talked to Carolyn about FRFF. She is thinking of camping for the first time this year. I'm trying to talk her into camping by the Budgiedome. I told her that I'd set up her tent for her as an inducement. After Carolyn left Lisa and I shopped at the Seaport. We were looking for the Tevas. We didn't find them and yet another clerk had never heard of them. Before we got to the last shop that might have them Lisa got distracted by Purple-liscious. A store dedicated to all things purple, Lisa's favorite color. By the time we got out of there the other store was closed.
I am going to see if I can return my knockoffs to Target. Sandals should not fall apart in less than a month. It would help if I could find the receipt. Gella has started excavating on the site that she found the pottery shard. I'm intrigued, how did pottery similar to Minoan find its way to Vancouver?
