With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-09-01 - 12:32 a.m. This is going to be a really cheap entry. I had some real issues I want to discuss but I think I’m going to think about them some more. I’ll probably forget them of course J I did one of my hanging out in the East Village nights. First I went to Popeye’s for dinner, then to the Strand. I ended up going on a bargain shopping spree. I bought lots of things tonight I didn’t really need. I already have some of them and I’m going to give them as gifts. Here is what I bought: The Hobbit -The Houghton Mifflin trade paperback edition: I never saw this edition before. Jurgen- The Bodley Head hard cover edition: I’ve never seen this either. The Truth by Terry Pratchett: Pratchett is my favorite living author but this is the fist time I actually bought one of his books. I don’t know anything about it but I trust Terry The Lying Stones of Marrkech Penultimate Reflections in Natural History by Stephen Gould: I need some good science reading The Romance of Leonardo Da Vinci by Dmitri Merjekowski: This was my father’s favorite book. I have a copy of this edition but for a buck I got it as a gift. Maybe I’ll give it to DVN, that would be sort of fitting. Soldiers Three Story of the Gadsbys in Black and White by Rudyard Kipling: This is the book that the film Gunga Din is based on. It was also a buck. After the Strand I went to the Fort at the Sidewalk Café , one of my favorite clubs. I didn’t go to see anyone in particular, just to check out whoever was playing. I stayed for two artists; Barry Bliss and Nneka (that is not a typo). Barry said he was physically weak and it showed. He almost fell down several times. I think he must have some sort of condition. He was a pretty interesting songwriter, I’d see him again. Nneka is a rock band that I might not have given enough of a chance. They didn’t excite me, well not musically, The lead singer and the flutist are both quite attractive young women J I did something I very rarely do, I ordered a beer, after I did the waiter came back and told me it was happy hour and that I get another. I can’t remember the last time I had two beers in a night, it must have been college. I really don’t like alcohol. I made sure to stay for a few hours and to take a walk and eat afterwards before I drove. After that I went to a crepiery and had a delicious chocolate and banana crepe. That place should be on the Gordon Tour of New York. Then I checked out the East Village Bookshop and went on another bargain binge. I paid $2 for everything I bought. Orlando Furioso Part One by Ludovico Ariosto: A classic from the Italian Rennaissance, it has been on my must read list since college. I was always looking to get it cheap. They also have a $2 CD bin, I bought: I Know - John Gorka: Early Gorka from 1987. The only song I know by title is B.B. King was Wrong but it’s Gorka so I know it’s good. Give Yourself a Hand and God Shuffled His Feet - the Crash Test Dummies: I’m not that familiar with the Dummies but I love what I’ve heard. I’m always surprised that they aren’t more popular among Früheads. I’ll take them over the Worms any day. Lore - Clannad: I’m a sucker for Irish Music. Carey is this the band you don’t like or is it Altan? Dreamland - Madeleine Peyroux: I have this but I couldn’t resist buying it as a gift. I love her. Days of Open Hand Suzanne Vega. Suzanne Rocks the Kasbah.
