With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2001-11-06 - 9:59 a.m. It seems that I'm now officially WFUV's most famous member. I woke up this morning, a few minutes ago when my sister Alison called. Her friend was listening to WFUV and that is how Claudia Marshall referred to me. I better give the back-story to give it context. Yesterday Lisa and I went to the taping of the premiere episode of Crossroads a new show on CMT, Country Music Television. The show pairs a country singer with someone from another genre, this time it was Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello. We were told that the show started at 7:30 and that doors were at 7:00 and that we have to be early. We met at 6:00, grabbed some pizza, and got on the line by 6:30. They didn't let us in until 8:00. It was cold outside too. How come they can start a Broadway show on time but tapings of TV music shows are always delayed? It was actually fun online hanging out with Lisa and all the WFUV people. I got to see Jim's wife, Alice, even. I was a total idiot though. I made a birthday card for Lisa and left it at home. Now she's going to get it really late. When they finally let us in, after a security search, we ended up sitting in the third row. We were no more than 20 feet away from Elvis and Lucinda during parts of the show. The show rocked. I didn't recognize Elvis when he came out; I haven't seen recent pictures of him. I loved the way he looked, like someone just pulled in off the street. His solo songs were mainly from the country part of his repertoire. He did one new song that was not country that really rocked. I only have one Lucinda album but I knew every song she played. She gets lots of playtime on WFUV. The highlight of the show was there duet on Lucinda's Change the Locks. They did it as a dialogue, him playing the man she is changing the lock to keep out. He really got into the role-playing and sang it with real venom. There was a Q & A segment and I got to ask a question. I said that Elvis has been on an odyssey across musical genres but Lucinda has stuck to one. I wanted to know if she'd been pressured to keep her music homogeneous. She said, "No," the entire audience cheered. That is what brought on Claudia's remark this morning, she was telling about me asking the question. So that brings us up to the present. I'm seeing Richard Thompson with Shelly tonight. I'm so excited. I get to play with one of my best friends and see one of my favorite performers. I might get to play with RT too. He's going to be interviewed on WFUV today and I'm trying to get permission to be there then. I'll do work getting stuff together from the fund drive and take a break to watch his interview. I'm waiting to hear from Karin the membership director.
