With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

How I invented dirt

First off I need a mystery solved. Someone said they have a crush on me through crushlink. It doesn’t really mean that though. All it means is that they guessed I was the one that had a crush on them. To make it worse when you guess it right it says you didn’t. So if you are reading this and you get a crushlink, don’t go to the site, just ask me if it was me. I guessed a few people before I gave up. Second of all if you were the one that listed me let me know.

OK now that that important business is out of the way I’ll get down to business. The weather was bad yesterday and I didn’t get a chance to do any recruiting. I did go into the city to buy my monthly railroad pass. While I was there I saw Stephanie the woman at Oren’s the coffee place. I actually asked her out. She actually said yes. Will miracles never cease?

I went straight from there to the Met game. The Mets lost again, not much of a shock. The Mets are in last place for a reason. I was just glad they played though.

I started talking on AIM at night again. I used to do that for hours every night but I’ve been doing it less and less. Recently I started talking to Lawrence and Stacey quite a bit. Stacey hasn’t heard my four stories yet so I get to tell them again J

I think I’ll tell one of them now. Everyone knows I invented dirt but I haven’t told how that came about.

When I was young there was no dirt. The earth was covered in solid rock. That made agriculture difficult. If you wanted to plant a field of wheat what you did was take a drill and drill rows of little holes. You then placed a seed in it and filled it with water. This entailed a great deal of work as you might guess. Replanting old fields was easier because you didn’t have to drill new holes. You did have to get rid of the plant remains from the previous year. My job on the family farm was cleanup. I had to pick up all the plant remains and the tailings from the drilling of the new field. As you might have gathered I tend to put things off. After I collected all the waste I put it in a big pile and just left it there instead of dumping in the ocean like I was supposed to. I did this year after year and the pile got bigger and bigger. Finally the neighbors complained and I went to dump the pile. When I did I noticed something interesting. There was wheat growing out of that mixture of ground up rock and decomposing plant matter moistened by the rain. That year instead of drilling new holes I just spread the pile out over a field and used my finger instead of a drill to make the holes for the seeds. I was finished weeks ahead of our neighbors. The next year my neighbors caught on and did the same thing. Soon it started spreading around the world. Finally the entire world was covered with my invention. I called it Detritus Including Recycled Tailings, DIRT for short.

So now you know the true story of the invention of dirt. Maybe next time I’ll tell you how I invented the toenail clipper.
