With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-01-07 - 5:10 p.m. Another day after entry; Lets see what I can remember. A year ago I titled my entry Fiat Lux it was about getting a new light fixture. The bulbs were guaranteed for two years. Guess what? Two out of three blew. Yesterday I went to buy more of the halogena bulbs. When I went to put them in I couldn't open up the fixture; that was very frustrating. I went back to Home Depot today and asked someone how to do it. I think the electrician who installed it screwed up and that is making it more difficult. After buying the bulbs and visiting my father I went up to uncharted regions of the Bronx to see Deirdre Flint. She was appearing with Jeff Twardzik, Michelle Nagy, Marc Douglas Berado, and Trina Hamlin. I got there early because I wasn't sure if I'd find the place, the Uptown Coffeehouse. They gave directions that only worked if you were coming from Manhattan, not Queens. I had to figure out my own route in an area I'd never been to, Riverdale. When I went to take my seat this woman was looking straight at me as we walked in. I figured I should know her and went up to her and asked her "do I know you?" She said, "that she doesn't know, that she's Deirdre." I had only seen her from quite a distance at FRFF; I had never seen her up close. We started talking; she's a fun person. She's a sub teacher. I asked her if she was a fun one, she said, "No I'm a mean one." She has to be mean to maintain order. She doesn't know if she is going to be at FRFF this year but I invited her up to the Budgiedome if she goes. She said she'd come. She went on first and did Boob Fairy which made me very happy. I had to resists singing my evil lyrics out loud. When she did 1-900-Score-a-Date she asked for a man to come on stage with her and read a part. I saw this at FRFF and volunteered. I am such a ham I can't resist this kind of thing. I always feel so nerdy doing things like that but I have fun. I even got to have Deirdre say "I love you" to me during the song. The other performers weren't nearly as good. Deirdre really should have gone last; she's a hard act to follow. The only other one that I liked was Trina Hamlin. I didn't notice it at FRFF but I did last night, but Deirdre's writing and phrasing are reminiscent of Christine Lavin. I'm going to have to talk to Christine about her. She is always promoting up and coming talent. She'd be a great opener for Christine. I wonder what Chris would make of the Cheerleader song though, she was one in HS. Next month I'm going to have to go back to the venue. It is tiny, not that hard to get to, and they have good people showing up; The Kennedys on Feb 3, and Cliff Eberhardt on April 21. I'm getting in a strange habit. I am doing most of my reading of LOTR after 2AM. That means I'm not getting much sleep. I'm up to The Mirror of Galadriel now For today's quote I'm going to give you the most discussed issue on the Tolkien Newsgroups, "Do Balrogs have wings." Read this and tell me what you think. Please email me about this. His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings. It raised the whip, and the thongs whined and cracked. Fire came from its nostrils. But Gandalf stood firm…. The Balrog made no answer. The fire in it seemed to die, abut the darkness grew. It stepped forward slowly on to the bridge, and suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall. That's it. Do Balrogs have wings? It is just a metaphor? This starts knife fights among Tolkien fans. I'm not going to say what I think.
