With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Unauthorized

Yesterday after Lawrence left I went to the Turning Point to seeDave's True Story. They shared the bill with Too Human. It is always difficult finding the way to the Turning Point. The town of Piermont is deliberately isolated. It is on the West bank of the Hudson River and there are very few roads connecting it to the main roads to the west. The last time I went was the first that I didn't get lost. This time was the first I attempted it without written directions, I relied on my memory. That is not as dangerous as it might sound, my memory works much better at finding my way around than it does on remembering names. I got there without a problem at 6PM, which is when doors were supposed to open. The venue is tiny, it only holds 69 people but I try hard to sit up front there because that is the only place that you have any legroom. I was the first one there so I got my seat right up front.

Most of the crowd around me seemed to be fans of Too Human. The guy across from me was talking to them before the show and they were saying how they used a photo he took on their webpage. There were some DTS fans but it wasn't their usual crowd. The Turning Point doesn't get that many people coming up from the City as you need a car to get there. As a matter of fact Kelly Flint from DTS was shocked to see me there. She asked if I took a bus up. She forgot that I also saw them out on the Island another show I had to drive to. That show was just 3 days after a double hernia operation but that's another story.

Too Human was interesting but I'm not sure if I'd go see them on their own. They do have one unusual piece of instrumentation. They are a duet, a woman on the guitar and a man on percussion. On many of the songs the man doubles on the mouth trumpet.

They seemed very familiar to me. I am pretty sure I have spoken to the man even if I haven't seen them perform. Their name seemed familiar to Carey too. I'm wondering if they might have played at FRFF.

Dave's True Story did quite a few new songs, which is always great. They also had a couple of interesting pieces of news. The first was that two of their songs are appearing on the soundtrack of a movie coming out in March, Kissing Jessica Stein. They saw the movie the recently and when one of their songs comes on two women start to kiss. Dave said, "Now I can die!" This led to Kelly questioning why men get so excited at two women kissing. I resisted saying, "because they are so soft and pretty."

Their other piece of news was that Chesky Records is suing them for $7,000,000. They don't have that kind of money of course. They substance of the complaint is that they libeled Chesky in an interview they did in the New York Times. Chesky interfered in the production of their last CD, which led to it being called Unauthorized. I love the album but DTS is not happy with it, it could have been better. They voiced this displeasure in the interview. They were very careful in what they said so they are sure they will win the suit. Dave's father is a lawyer just in case. I told them I'd sign a deposition saying that I hated Chesky records before the interview so that no damage could have been done.

After the show I only stayed around to talk to them for a bit, I was tired and wanted to get home. On the way back I made a wrong turn. It is harder finding your way back from the Turning Point than it is to get there. The street signs are often missing or not visible as you come to the intersection. It ends up that my wrong turn is a shortcut; if I can find it again I'll take it whenever I come home from there.

I have to correct an oversight in yesterday's entry. One of the performers in the Loser's Lounge show was none other than Michael Cerveris. He starred in three of the four performances I saw of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He was totally unrecognizable out of costume. If I had been keeping a diary back then I would have written a lot about Hedwig. It isn't every musical that I see 4 times, and this was all in a 2-month period. It was so wonderful I wanted to share it with my friends. The first two times I saw it with Jena, the second time bad Carey and Barbara joined us. The other two times were with Anita and Lisa. Good Carey was supposed to come up to see it right before it closed but she ended up having a test that day. Of all the rotten luck. I would have loved to have taken Shelly and Gella and Marti to see it too. I got to see John Cameron Mitchell, the creator of the show and the original star, in one of the performances. Cerveris was great but Mitchell was beyond great. He is Hedwig. If you haven't seen the movie rent it. I hope they revive the show some day. I think I'm going to have to listen to the CD tonight. I'll have to wait for the Loser's Lounge Tribute to David Bowie to end.
