With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Nothing Says Thank You Like Saying it in Print

I don’t have any particular excuses today. Well I do have a lot of grading to do and I am hungry and want breakfast but that shouldn’t reflect on the quality of the entry.

So now instead of starting with an excuse I’m starting with an explanation why I don’t have an excuse. These entries are really self-involved. Good thing I’m not.

I started grading my finite math class’s test. I can’t really say how people have done since I don’t grade them one test at a time. I grade it one question at a time. It is really disappointing how many students miss the central point of problems. What makes it worse is that I go over it every time I do a problem. The reason of course is that they don’t do the homework so have no real experience solving the problems.

I went out yesterday to buy kosher for Passover deserts. Adrian’s the local kosher bakery that was amazingly good went out of business shortly before Pesach last year so I showed up at the Seder empty-handed much to the disappointment of Lewis who grew up in this neighborhood. I scouted out a new bakery in Flushing and went there yesterday. Guess what happened? They just went out of business too. Charis mentioned that she knew a place not far from where she lives. She happened to call me then and I asked her where it was. When I got there I discovered that they didn’t have anything kosher for Passover. They just had kosher style. I gave up, went to Walbaums, and bought kosher for Passover chocolate leaf cookies. I hope they let me into the Seder.

I don’t think I mentioned this but the last time I went shopping I loaded up on kosher for Passover Coke. Why is that a big deal? It is made with real sugar not corn syrup! I usually have diet soda but I made an exception for that.

Last night I went to see Red Molly at the Brennan Coffeehouse in Jersey City. What makes it special is that it is in the beautiful beaux arts Brennan Court house. When is the last time you went to a concert in a rotunda with a beautiful dome like this?

I was doing merch and got there early. People kept asking me if I was with the band and it is a totally cliché but I said yes. I was sharing merch duties with Chris and Jim and found a table down front with our names on it. The Mollys had thoughtfully reserved it for us. I left my bag with my tests and my camera on it and went in search of the band. I figured only a paranoid wouldn’t feel safe leaving their stuff at a folk concert in a courthouse.

The green room was up on the fourth floor. That was good because It meant I got to explore the building and not see the non-public parts. I found Abbie, Laurie, and Carolann in an ugly room that could have been used for meetings or jury deliberations. There were court records strewn in boxes on the floor. We were good and hardly went through any of them.

Red Molly just got the copies of their new album, Love and Other Tragedies and Abbie and Anthony just came out with their new album Bad Nights/Better Days. I was given copes of both of them. I hear they have music on them, and there is cover art but we all know that the most important part of any CD is the acknowledgements. Just take a look.

I’m especially happy that The Budgiedome got its props.

When Abbie said that she had to change I asked if that meant that I should or get my camera. The dirty look I got was a good hint she meant to leave. I bet she’d have let Chris get his camera.

When I got downstairs Chris was there and we were shortly joined by Jim. We even sold some CDs before the show. Arpie was there too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him locally outside of his coffeehouse series, Coffee With Conscience

I should know who the opening act was but I don’t. I had seen her before but that doesn’t help.

Red Molly was great. The highlight was the finale when they stepped off the stage and into the center of the rotunda directly under the center of the dome and performed Susan Werner’s May I Suggest A Capella. The acoustics were amazing. Their voices rose to the top of the dome then reflected back down. I was sitting right next to them in the center so it was focused right on me. The reverb was heavenly as were their harmonies. I suggested that they record something a capella there. It was a unique sound.

Wow I actually wrote something about the music. I still don’t know how to write about concerts. Should I mention that Carolann never played the mandolin? No, I won’t. You won’t find that out from me.

After the show album sales were brisk though they didn’t sell any hats or t-shirts. I was modeling them. I hope that wasn’t cause and effect.

After the show Chris, Jim, and lug stuff back to the Redmollymobile. Chris and I were going to hop on the PATH train but Jim, who lives out on the Island offered us rides back to the City. Chris was out of his way in Brooklyn so he dropped him off by the subway on Delancey Street. I was parked at the LIRR but that is only 5 minutes off the Long Island Expressway that Jim takes hope so he dropped me off there. I was home shortly after 11. That is really early.

Did you pick up that I had a lot of fun last night?

Here is the slide show.

Today I’ll do grade then head up to Connecticut for the Seder.
