With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.
2002-08-04 - 10:30 a.m.
Yesterday was productive. The first thing I did was go down to the Gas Station my car was out and empty it out and take off the license plates. I left the title for the Junk Yard that is taking the car.
Then I went car shopping. One lot I went to has been in my neighborhood for my whole life. My father bought a car there in the mid sixties. I went in looking for a small hatchback that gets really good mileage. I want something that I can pack all the FRFF stuff in that is practical the rest of the year. The guy tried to sell me a Mercury Villager SUV. He told me it gets 30mpg. I checked online it gets less than 20. I hate goniffs.
I found one place that had a 1996 Honda civic hatchback in my price range but not on that lot. I'll probably end up buying that.
I had reservations to see the Kennedys yesterday. That was perfect. I was all upset about my car and they always make me feel good. I needed a dose of Life is Large. I cancelled my reservations yesterday morning. What could make me do that? I found out that Arlo was giving a free concert as part of the Lincoln Center Outdoors series. I love the Kennedys but I've seen them 13 times the last few years. I've seen Arlo only twice.
Arlo has picked up a lot from Pete Seeger over the years. He gets the crowd involved. He makes the crowd feel good about themselves. He you feel like you can do something to make the world a better place.
Arlo also has a lot of his father in him. He has managed to be both a strong critic of the USA while being a patriot and a booster. He points out all the things we can be proud of as Americans. My favorite was when he was telling the story of playing the folk festival in Denmark right after the Berlin Wall fell and all these Eastern Europeans were there. He sang I Can't Help Falling In Love With You. Everyone there knew all the words. He was proud to live in a country where the whole world knew the words to our songs. He then made all of us sing it. I didn't take much prompting.
I love singing along at concerts. I actually know the words to the songs at Arlo shows and he helps us along Pete Seeger style. He said that it is only in the last 100 years that singing became something that people listened to while other people did it. Before that everyone sang.
I loved looking at the crowd. When he did This land everyone sang and knew the words, senior citizens and children. We were all singing together. It's a great bonding experience.
Arlo is also really funny. Everyone laughs at his shows. I've heard most of the stories before and I still laugh.
I spent yesterday alone. I always crave company but I need these days alone. It gives me time to think. It also gets me to talk to strangers. I had a fun group around me at the show. There were DVN fans sitting right in front of me. One of them and the guy behind me were big Tom Stoppard fans.
I'm out of my funk now. Arlo was the right medicine.
