I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Yesterday I Did Nothing

On the seventh day the Lord rested and I followed his example. I just left the house to take a little walk in the neighborhood and get some fresh air. I shouldn't have gotten dressed. There's nothing wrong with wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt outside. Of course I can't really go out without shoes.

It took me all day to start it but I did laundry. Clean clothes are a good thing. OK that's it for what I did yesterday. OK, I did watch the Met game and they won. There were up 4–2 when Jane walked in. Simultaneously a Cub hit a home run. I told her to leave. The theory that what I and other fans do affects the game has no basis in fact but is emotionally satisfying. I know that's exactly what I usually rail about but as it has no effect on the game or anything else substantial the emotional satisfaction is the only result so I am being rational. That outlook is a big part of being me.

Every day I want to write about my fantasy baseball team and almost every day I realize that there are few things less interesting than hearing about somebody else's fantasy baseball team. I'll just say that we have our biggest lead of the season and it's making me very happy.

No what else people don't want to hear about? Other people's dreams. So I'm going to tell you about my dream. I just want to know if this happens to anyone else. It only started happening to me in the last year. In dreams all these weird things happen and you just accept them. What has started happening is that something in the dream will confuse me or I can't remember something I should remember and that leads to me waking up. Last night Mark Berube was in my dream and I couldn't get his last name right. I knew it began with a B and had three syllables. It didn't come to me till I woke up.

It's another beautiful day and I have no plans. I will get out today. If nothing else, I need to go food shopping. Yes, I can walk 5 minutes to the local supermarket but instead I'm going to head into Manhattan an hour and a half away to go to Trader Joe's and save a few dollars. I'll take a walk somewhere. I made an executive decision. I'm going to the High Bridge. That's not the High Line. It's an old railroad bridge from Upper Manhattan to the Bronx. It's a bit of a challenge to get there. It's something I've wanted to do since it opened a few years ago. I tried to make plans to go there with a friend but it never worked out so I'll do it by myself. I'll take pictures.

Now it's time for poached eggs and ham for breakfast.
